Lisa-Natalie Anjozian has seen solitary mountain lions up close, on four separate occasions. Two of those times were from the back of a horse. As a former Forest Service and Park Service ranger, Lisa believes one of the many advantages of such work is that you are continually noticing what is happening in your world.

Lisa's PhotoLisa writes about the natural world: for federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, Rocky Mountain Research Station, North Cascades National Park, and the U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory, as well as for research programs such as the Joint Fire Science Program of the National Interagency Fire Center. Specializing in science interpretation, Lisa has explained complex natural processes, environmental issues and science findings for general audiences. Her science briefs, science updates, newsletters, articles and essays appear on many websites and publications of federal agencies, universities, and other scientific and research institutions.

As a science writer, she has shown readers, for example, why recovery was so quick for many plants and animals in the blast area after the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, and how to live with a volcano such as Mount Rainier in your backyard. Having spent a very cold night in a fire lookout, Lisa was able to bring personal insight in revealing how fire management in the twenty-first century has changed since the days when watching for fire comprised remote stations staffed by lonely humans. The new era of firewatching employs, as she describes it, lookouts in the sky with algorithms—NASA's satellites that offer real-time data, and a sky-high view, to fire personnel on the ground.

In addition to writing for organizations and institutions, Lisa's narrative essays appear in various magazines such as Spirit of Aloha, The East Bay Monthly, and the North American Review.

A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Lisa was introduced to wilderness by her horse. When she isn't writing or wandering in wilderness, Lisa teaches horsemanship to eager equestrians.
